The photographic works in the Sanctuary series consist of Furniture for Birds and Ancestral Portraits. First Kaplan constructed and created the scene, manipulating and arranging all of the elements, then she photographed them. The photographs in Portraits were then hand-coloured.
“Birds sit in a soft crocheted nest on twig chairs and play cards at a twig table. They relax in a soft, moss-lined twig rocking chair and sleep in a dandelion crib. Their hand coloured ancestral portraits hang on the wall next to the stairway. This is an installation for birds.” Nomi Kaplan
